A quick tyre check you can do in five minutes
You do not need a hoist to keep an eye on your tyres. A quick look in the driveway once a month tells you most of what matters:
- Find the tread wear indicators, the small raised bars sitting in the main grooves. If the tread is level with them, the tyre is at its limit.
- Try the five cent coin test. Slot a coin into the tread, and if the tread does not reach the tip of the echidna’s spines, you are getting low and it is time to plan a replacement.
- Run your hand across the tread. A feathered or sharp edge on one side points to an alignment problem.

The code on your sidewall looks cryptic, but it is easy once you know it. Take 205/55 R16 91V as an example. The 205 is the tyre width in millimetres.
