You need one when you transfer a registered light vehicle to a new owner, when you bring a vehicle onto Queensland registration from another state, and when you register a vehicle again after it has been off the road. Caravans and trailers between 750kg and 4.5t need one too, and so do motorbikes when they are sold.

Queensland changed one thing worth knowing. You no longer need the certificate just to advertise the car for sale. You do need it before you dispose of the vehicle to anyone other than a dealer, and you hand it to the new owner at the transfer. Sort it before the keys change hands, not after, or the transfer stalls and you risk a fine over $700.

What A Roadworthy Certificate Costs, And How Long It Lasts (No Surprises)

Here is the cost question, answered plainly. In Queensland the safety certificate inspection fee is set by the government, so it is the same wherever you go. For a car up to 4.5t, the fee is $102.70, as at 1 July 2026. A trailer over 750kg is set at $51.45, and a motorbike at $66.00 . If you want us to come to you, a mobile callout is added on top. That is the whole picture, with no padding.

A safety certificate does not last forever. For a private sale it stays valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first. Licensed dealers work to 3 months or 1,000 km. So time the inspection close to your sale, not months ahead. Book too early, and you may need a second one.

Yes. To transfer a registered light vehicle to a private buyer in Queensland, you need a current safety certificate, which is the roadworthy. You no longer need it just to advertise the car. You do need it before you hand the vehicle over, and you give it to the new owner at the transfer. A few exemptions exist, such as a transfer between spouses, but for a standard private sale it is required.
