Hybrid and EV Servicing in Underwood
Logbook servicing from $140, hybrid battery health checks with a printed result, and a straight answer about your warranty before you book. Two minutes off the Pacific Motorway at Darnick Street.
If you have been searching for a hybrid mechanic near Underwood, an EV mechanic on the southside, or just someone who will service a Corolla Hybrid without sending you back to the dealer, this page is written for you. Singh Mechanic Workshop and Tyre opened the Underwood workshop to take the jobs that need space, equipment and time, and hybrid and electric vehicles sit at the top of that list, so every hybrid and EV booking across both workshops is done here at the Underwood workshop on Darnick Street. Everything a hybrid or EV needs is done here, from logbook servicing and brakes to high voltage battery health checks, inverter cooling, 12 volt battery replacement and the diagnostic work that most general workshops will not touch. The same rule that has run the Beenleigh workshop for over a decade runs here too. Nothing is repaired until you know the cause and have approved an itemised quote.
Do hybrid and electric cars actually need servicing?
Yes, and the honest version is that they need a different service, not a smaller one. A hybrid still has a petrol engine with oil, filters, coolant, a drive belt and an exhaust, and every one of those wears exactly as it does in a petrol car. On top of that it carries a high voltage battery, an inverter with its own cooling loop, an electric motor and a regenerative braking system that changes how the brakes wear. An EV drops the engine and everything attached to it, which is why its service list is shorter, but the items left on that list are the ones most workshops have never seen.
What catches owners out is the logbook. Toyota, Hyundai, Kia, BYD, MG and Tesla all publish service schedules for their hybrid and electric models, with intervals that are usually twelve months or a set kilometre figure, whichever comes first. Skip them and you lose the record that keeps your warranty position clean, and you miss the one chance each year somebody inspects the battery cooling system before it fails. The next two sections show exactly what gets done on each type of vehicle, and the chart under them shows what wears on a petrol car, a hybrid and an EV side by side.
What wears on a petrol car, a hybrid and an EV?
The point of the chart is that the work moves from the engine bay to the battery, the brakes and the software, and the workshop you choose needs to be set up for that side of the car. Cheaper is not the lesson, different is.
What does a hybrid service include at Underwood?
Everything in the manufacturer’s logbook for the interval, done to the manufacturer’s specification, plus the hybrid specific checks that the logbook assumes a trained technician is doing anyway. On the engine side that means engine oil and filter, air and cabin filters, coolant condition, drive belt, spark plugs at the specified interval, brake fluid, and the brake inspection that matters more on a hybrid than on any other car. On the electric side it means the high voltage battery cooling fan and duct cleaned and tested, the inverter coolant level and condition checked, the battery state of health read through the scan tool and printed for you, the 12 volt auxiliary battery load tested, and the hybrid system scanned for stored fault codes before they become a warning on the dash.
The cooling fan deserves its own sentence, because it is the single biggest reason hybrid batteries fail early in Queensland. On most Toyota hybrids it sits behind the rear seat and pulls cabin air across the battery. Dog hair, dust and a blocked filter mean the battery runs hot, and a battery that runs hot every summer loses capacity years ahead of its design life. It is cleaned on every hybrid service here, and that alone is worth the trip.
What does an electric car service include?
No oil, no filters, no belts, no exhaust, so what is left? More than the showroom suggested, as at 2026. This is the EV list, with why each item matters.
| Item | Why it matters on an EV | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| High voltage battery health check | Range and resale both follow battery state of health, and most owners have never seen the number | Read through the scan tool, printed for you, compared to the manufacturer's new figure |
| Battery and motor coolant | The battery pack and drive unit run their own cooling loop, and coolant ages like any other | Level, condition and service interval checked, replaced at the manufacturer's interval |
| Brakes | Regenerative braking does most of the stopping, so the discs and pads sit unused, and in Queensland humidity unused brakes rust and seize | Discs and pads inspected, calipers freed, slides lubricated, the fix most EV owners do not know they need |
| Brake fluid | Still hydraulic, still absorbs moisture, still due on time | Tested and replaced at the manufacturer's interval |
| 12 volt battery | The most common EV breakdown, because the 12 volt battery runs every computer and the car will not wake without it | Load tested on every service, replaced before it strands you |
| Cabin filter | Most EVs run the climate system constantly to condition the battery, so the filter works harder | Replaced at the interval |
| Tyres and alignment | EVs are heavier and deliver torque instantly, so tyres wear faster and uneven wear shows sooner | Tread, pressures and wear pattern checked, alignment recommended when the wear says so |
| Suspension and steering | The extra weight loads bushes and ball joints harder than the same body on a petrol platform | Inspected on the hoist on every service |
| Software and recalls | Manufacturers push updates and recall campaigns that the dash never tells you about | Checked against the VIN at every service |
For warranty service on an EV, the manufacturer's own portal or dealer is sometimes the only place certain software work can be done, and we will tell you when that is the case rather than pretend otherwise.
How long does a hybrid battery really last, and what does replacement cost?
Straight answer, most hybrid batteries outlast the car’s first two owners, and the ones that fail early almost always failed from heat, not age. Toyota warrants its hybrid traction batteries for eight years or 160,000 kilometres against falling below 70 percent of original capacity, and plenty of Prius and Camry batteries are still working at fifteen years. Capacity does fall over time, which is why a health check matters, and the chart below shows the shape of that decline and where the warranty line sits.
When a battery does need replacing, the honest range is wide because the car decides it. A reconditioned pack for a common Toyota hybrid sits at the low end, a new genuine pack for a larger or newer vehicle at the high end, and a full EV traction battery outside of warranty is a different conversation altogether. The pricing band below gives the ranges we work to, and the health check tells you which end your car is at before anyone talks about replacement.
Will servicing at an independent workshop void my warranty?
No, and you do not have to take our word for it. The ACCC’s guide to the Australian Consumer Law for motor vehicle sales and repairs states that “any suggestion by manufacturers or dealers that vehicles need to be serviced at a licensed dealer to maintain the owner’s consumer guarantee rights is not correct.” What a manufacturer’s warranty can require is that servicing is carried out by qualified staff, according to the manufacturer’s specification, and using appropriate quality parts where required. Those three conditions are how every hybrid and EV service at Underwood is done, and your logbook is stamped and your invoice itemises the parts and the specification followed.
There is one honest exception, and we would rather you heard it here. Toyota extends its hybrid battery cover from eight years to ten on condition that the annual battery health check and routine logbook servicing are done at Toyota. Our battery health check is the same test on the same equipment, but it does not count toward that particular extension, because Toyota’s condition names Toyota. If your Toyota hybrid is between five and eight years old and you value years nine and ten of battery cover, that is a real decision, and we will lay it out for you rather than sell you a service that costs you cover you wanted. Every other manufacturer has its own terms, and we will read yours with you.
What does hybrid and EV servicing cost in Underwood?
| The job | Price as at 2026 | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid logbook service | From $140 | Full logbook interval to specification, engine and electric side, cooling fan cleaned, battery state of health printed, logbook stamped |
| EV logbook service | From $140 | Full logbook interval, battery health printed, brakes freed and inspected, 12 volt battery load tested, software and recalls checked |
| Hybrid or EV battery health check | Included with every service, quoted on its own | Scan tool state of health read and printed, 12 volt test, cooling system check, verbal result before you leave |
| Hybrid battery reconditioning or replacement | Quoted after the health check | Health check first, then reconditioned or new pack options with the warranty on each |
| 12 volt battery replacement | From $150 | Tested, replaced, systems rewoken and checked, see the batteries page |
| EV brake service | Quoted after inspection | Calipers freed, slides lubricated, pads and discs replaced only where the inspection says so |
| Diagnostic, hybrid system or EV fault | $99 | The fault found first with the $99 diagnostic, then an itemised quote you approve before any part is ordered |
Whichever line applies, nothing is fitted or replaced until you have approved an itemised quote, and every service leaves with a printed battery state of health.
Which hybrid and electric makes do you service?
Toyota and Lexus hybrids are the bulk of the work, Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Kluger, C-HR, Yaris Cross and Prius, because they are the bulk of the hybrids on Queensland roads. Beyond Toyota the workshop services Hyundai and Kia hybrids and EVs, including Ioniq and EV6, Honda and Subaru hybrids, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, MG hybrids and the MG4 and ZS EV, BYD Atto 3, Dolphin and Seal, Nissan e-Power, and Tesla Model 3 and Model Y for everything outside the items Tesla reserves for its own service network. The scan tools are Autel and Snap-on with current hybrid and EV coverage, and the team includes Certificate III Automotive Electrical on staff. If you drive something not listed, call, because the answer is usually yes and the honest answer is always given before you drive over.

Quick hybrid and EV questions, answered straight
How often does a hybrid car need servicing?
Follow the logbook, which for most Toyota, Hyundai, Kia and Honda hybrids means every twelve months or a set kilometre figure, whichever comes first, as at 2026. The engine side of a hybrid wears exactly like a petrol car, and the battery cooling fan needs cleaning at least yearly in Queensland, so stretching the interval saves nothing and costs battery life.
How often does an electric car need servicing?
Most manufacturers specify an annual inspection, with brake fluid, battery coolant and cabin filter on longer intervals. The brakes are the reason not to skip the yearly visit, because a car that barely uses its brakes is the car whose brakes seize.
How much does a hybrid battery replacement cost?
It depends on the car and on whether a reconditioned pack or a new genuine pack is the right answer, and the health check decides that before any figure is quoted. The pricing table above gives the ranges we work to, and no battery is replaced here on a warning light alone.
Can you do my Tesla service?
Yes, for everything outside the items Tesla keeps within its own network, which is mostly software and certain warranty work. Brakes, tyres, alignment, suspension, cabin filter, 12 volt battery, battery coolant and the annual inspection are all done here, and you are told upfront if something has to go back to Tesla.
What does the hybrid system warning light mean?
It means the hybrid control system has logged a fault, which can be anything from a weak 12 volt battery to a failing cell in the traction pack. It is a scan tool job, not a guess, and the $99 diagnostic reads the code, tests the battery and tells you the cause before anything is quoted.
Do EVs need a safety certificate the same as other cars?
Yes. A Queensland safety certificate applies to hybrids and EVs the same way it applies to petrol cars, and the inspection covers the same items, brakes, tyres, steering, lights and structure, with the added check that the high voltage system shows no faults.
Can I get a courtesy car while my hybrid is in?
Courtesy cars are available for regular customers, and a battery health check is usually done while you wait. Ask when you book.
Serviced to specification, battery health in writing, two minutes off the motorway.
